As retirement grew imminent, I decided to buy myself an extravagant gift. My quilting buddy and I headed off to purchase quilting machines. These are not the large computerized machines that have been available for years. They’re industrial strength, free-motion machines. I recall a feeling of empowerment when I realized I had the ability to quickly and efficiently quilt all the tops I love to make. I’d hand-quilted in the past and even managed to quilt on my old Bernina machine.
Unfortunately, since I retired, I haven’t spent as much time quilting as I intended. I am determined, this year is going to be different. I already finished two quilts for two of my granddaughters pictured here. Blue seems to be everybody’s favorite color right now.
One reason for my newfound enthusiasm is a product I found at the Pomona Sewing Festival last month—Martelli quilting paddles, made in America. They enable me to grip my quilt firmly and move it around like nothing I ever tried before. Naturally, the more I use them, the easier this will be. I’m hoping to attempt some more elaborate quilting than I ever tried before. We’ll see how that goes.
Since I’m endorsing products, here’s one I found in a tea shop in northern California. Despite repeated attempts, I never managed to find an infuser that was large enough for a whole teapot. This loose tea infuser basket can be found at Rishi-tea.com. Type “basket” in the search box. It is fabulous! I even discovered a way to secure it when the teapot opening is too large. Just stick the lid in sideways to stabilize the infuser while you pour the water. If you are a tea enthusiast, I can’t recommend it highly enough.
One more find. I’ve enjoyed decorating with my three-tier tray so much, I couldn’t resist a smaller, two-tier tray I found on sale at Hobby Lobby. You know me. If one is good, ten is better! It even fits on the mantle. Can’t wait to load it up!
Before I commence Spring decorating, it’s time to pour myself a cup of Prince of Wales tea and have a seat at the quilting machine.
Loved the lattice work quilt! The quilting paddles are intriguing; I have always stuck to smaller quilts as I hate the ‘drag’ created by larger quilts. This may be the answer…
