This is what happens when lunatics run out of elastic! While I’m waiting for a delivery, I decided to make face masks for dolls. Not that I need much prompting to make something for dolls, but they might come in handy if a child you know balks at wearing their own. Sure enough, I had some scraps of elastic just big enough. These work for any doll approximately the size of American Girl dolls. Be sure to read through the directions before you start. Project takes about 15 minutes.
Cut two scraps of fabric 2 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Cut two lengths of elastic cord 3 1/2 inches.
Knot the ends of elastic pieces.
With right sides of fabric together and starting about 1 inch from a corner on a 4-inch side, make a narrow hem.
As you approach the corner, insert the elastic between fabric pieces with the knot facing out. I used a pin to keep the elastic from moving past the corner. Turn the corner and when you approach the next corner, insert the other end of the elastic in a similar manner.
Sew straight down the long end until you approach the next corner. Insert the second piece of elastic on that end as you did before.
Leave an opening about two inches long.
Use elastic to pull right side out through opening. Finger press edges.
Make two folds in each end. Pin.
Narrow hem all the way around.
These are small and certainly don’t have to be perfect. If the doll’s ears are too small, tie the elastic around the back of the doll’s head with a ribbon or piece of string to keep it in place. And you’re done!
